Rutland Psalter (1260) Demons

Dublin Core

Title

Rutland Psalter (1260) Demons

Description

Demons and other mythical creatures are found commonly throughout the Rutland Psalter. These two at the bottom of this page spread are particularly interesting as one os shooting an arrow into the rear of the other, with the arrow connecting to the tail of the letter P above it in the body text. Absurdity and humor are also common themes in grotesque illustrations, and the inclusion of these two demons is without a doubt to serve those pursuits. This page also features drop caps at the start of each sentence, illuminated in gold leaf on the left hand boarder decoration. Another common feature of grotesque illustration and visual design found throughout the Rutland Psalter.
