Rutland Psalter (1260) Hunter
Dublin Core
Title
Rutland Psalter (1260) Hunter
Description
Scenes of hunting are very common throughout grotesque illustrations in medieval manuscripts. This one found in the Rutland Psalter depicts a traditional hunting scene of a man with a bow, hunting dog, and horn stalking a rabbit hiding in its burrow. Scenes such as this one go to show that in contrast to the absurd and fantastical elements found in grotesque illustrations, there are also more grounded, “realistic” scenes of contemporary medieval life. However the style remains consistent. As the man, dog, rabbit and trees are all rendered in a stylized manner similar to that of the two creatures to the left of the hunter, embedded in the left hand boarder decoration.
