Luttrell Psalter (1320-1340) St. Peter and Demon

Dublin Core

Title

Luttrell Psalter (1320-1340) St. Peter and Demon

Description

This Page features a bishop or saint, identified by some scholars as St. Peter pinching the nose of a demon with tongs. A common theme in grotesque illustrations is the triumph of good over evil, or holy one the unholy. The inclusion of this scene could be seen as an attempt to solidify the book (and thus its commissioner) as on the same side as the saint, in the holy battle between good and evil.
