Luttrell Psalter (1320-1340) Watermill

Dublin Core

Title

Luttrell Psalter (1320-1340) Watermill

Description

The grotesque illustration on this page depicts a watermill as well as what appear to be fish traps in the river that powers the mill. It’s possible that this mill was owned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell, or located near his estate. The inclusion of the mill may be meant to indicate Sir Geoffrey’s wealthy status as a landowner. Regardless, it serves as an interesting example of how grotesques sometimes depicted the mundane, everyday scenery of medieval life.
